Academy 2001 shuttle

Academy 2001 shuttle, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has purchased a space-shuttle prop from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Aries 1B trans-lunar space shuttle, used in the Oscar-winning 1968 Stanley Kubrick-directed sci-fi film, was acquired for $344,000 on Saturday at Premiere Props' Hollywood Extravaganza Auction, the auction house confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. It will be on display at the Academy Museum, set to open in 2017.

We're excited to add such an iconic piece of movie history to our collection," an Academy spokesperson said in a statement. "We look forward to sharing the 2001 Aries 1B trans-lunar space shuttle with the public once the Academy Museum opens."

The prop, which is 32 inches high and 27 inches wide, is seen in the film when Dr. Heywood R. Floyd (William Sylvester) is transported from the International Space Station to the moon to take a look at a monolith.

The auction featured over 700 pieces of memorabilia, including an autograph book containing the signatures of all four Beatles, Brad Pitt's knife from Inglourious Basterds and costumes featured in Captain America: The First Avenger, Silver Linings Playbook, St. Vincent and August: Osage County.
