American Accused in Valentine's Day Mass Killing Plot in Canada
American Accused in Valentine's Day Mass Killing Plot in Canada, Police in Canada say they foiled a plot by an American woman and a Canadian man who planned to go to a public place in Halifax on Valentine's Day and kill as many people as possible before committing suicide.
The 23-year-old woman, from Geneva, Illinois, was arrested at Halifax Stanfield International Airport early Friday, according to the Nova Scotia Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Police in Geneva are assisting with the investigation.
The 19-year-old Canadian man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after officers surrounded his home, police said.
"It would have been devastating," Canadian Minister of Justice Peter Mackay said Saturday.
Officials said authorities received a tip that the 19-year-old Canadian and 23-year-old American "had access to firearms, and it was their intention to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on February 14 with the goal of opening fire to kill citizens and then themselves."
Mackay did not say what public venue was targeted, but said extra security was in place at the site.
An official told The Associated Press that the two suspects were chatting online and were apparently obsessed with death and had many photos of mass killings.
Police arrested two others, a 17 and 20-year-old, but their involvement in the plot remains under investigation.
Authorities believe they have arrested all individuals involved in the plot, said police.
Neither the ATF nor FBI are currently involved in the investigation.
