Hellcat Too Popular

Hellcat Too Popular, Mopar does everything bigger, badder and flashier than ever. Its loud-and-proud marketing theme is straight from Texas, as its modern muscle cars, the 2-door Challenger and 4-door Charger, pretty much one-up the competition at every turn.Offering more legroom and powerful engine performance, the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and Challenger R/T Scat Pack are clear signs that Dodge is doing something right.

It’s all about keeping the front-engine-RWD layout thriving, and car enthusiasts can’t find fault in that. Retro is in, and most fans believe the throwback exterior styling on both the Charger and Challenger are clearly the best examples of retro-infused sheetmetal on the market today.

Especially when equipped with the performance Street & Racing Technology (SRT) and R/T (Road & Track) packages.

At the 2015 Twin Cities Auto Show, Dodge brought several of its muscle cars. The biggest attraction was the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Finished in “show car” TorRed, the Charger Hellcat features a new front grill and hood with black inserts and cooling ducts for the engine and brakes. Together with an aggressive stance, thanks to 20-inch wheels wrapped in 275 / 40-series rubber, the Hellcat Charger is a stunner.

Yet what matters most is what’s lurking under the hood. A supercharged Hemi V8 with 707 HP helps this sports sedan hit a top speed of 204 MPH on the track, according to the official website.

All that, and the Hellcat Charger comes with a functional rear seat, fit for bringing along any family member, not just the little ones. This exclusive Charger has it going on, big time.

At first glance, we thought there was a pair of Charger SRT Hellcats. Closer inspection revealed another TorRed Charger, yet it was an SRT 392 model. This SRT 392 was positioned in front of a TV, part of an "interactive" driving experience. While the Hellcat was unavailable to the public, we checked out the Charger SRT 392, thoroughly enjoying the comfortable interior. The Charger SRT 392 doesn't have that cool Hellcat emblem or supercharged engine, but it still has plenty of power: Hemi 6.4 liter V8 makes 485 HP and 475 lb.-ft. of torque.

Those looking for a lightly smaller vehicle will find the 2-door Challenger a nice compromise. Compared to other pony cars, the Challenger is downright roomy, especially in the back seat. Bigger drivers will welcome the Challenger interior and all its amenities. The Bright White display car was a 2015 Challenger R/T Scat Pack featuring the optional ($1500) Leather Interior Group high performance seats finished in Suede/Nappa. This car is meant to be driven hard, but it is still comfy and refined.

Like the Charger, the Challenger has undergone a slight redesign. We like the new split grill, with hints of the ’71 production model thrown in for added coolness. The rear has also been revised, its LED taillamps surrounded by Gloss Black paint. Along with the aggressive lower front splitter and Scat Pack Stripe Group ($995; Bumblebee tail stripe, satin black fuel filler door and gloss black grill), the Challenger styling is very exciting. Most noticeable were the Matte Black lightweight forged aluminum wheels ($1000). Yes, we’re suckers for those cool Scat Pack fender badges, too.

Also displayed at 2015 Twin Cities Auto Show was the Dodge Viper SRT. It, too, was not made available to the public, but it kept the, uh, ‘90s retro theme going strong. Sure, the 2015 Viper is a new car per se, but it definitely has its roots in the past. Painted in Adrenaline Red, the Viper still is powered by a V10 with world-class sports car performance: 640 HP @ 6150 RPM.
