Monsanto says lobbyist in viral video does not work for them, A Monsanto spokesperson said Friday that a man interviewed in a video that had gone viral is not a paid lobbyist for the company. In the video, the man refuses to drink a glass of a commonly-used pesticide even after he said it's safe for humans.
French cable channel Canal+ conducted the interview with the man identified as Dr. Patrick Moore. Moore told the interviewer that glyphosate was not causing an increase in cancer rates in Argentina.
Glyphosate is an ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup weed killer brand.
"You can drink a whole quart of it and it won't hurt you," said Moore.
When the interviewer made the offer to give him a glass of glyphosate, Moore responded. "I'm not stupid."
He went on to say, "People try to commit suicide with it and fail."
When the interviewer kept pressing him, Moore walked out.
Monsanto said Friday that Moore does not work for them.
"Dr. Patrick Moore is not and never has been a paid lobbyist for Monsanto," said spokesperson Charla Lord in a statement. "Knowledgeable scientists, consumers and our farmer customers may be familiar with and confident in the safety of glyphosate, but their statements don't make them lobbyists for our company. Dr. Patrick Moore is one of those individuals. He agrees with the science that supports the safety of glyphosate, and is an advocate for technology and innovation."
Lord said Monsanto was trying to contact Canal+ to learn why Moore was identified as one of the company's lobbyists.
