New SIDS guidelines revealed

New SIDS guidelines revealed, The Academy of Pediatrics has released new guidelines to prevent sudden infant death syndrome Evidence continues to accumulate that SIDS is due to a defect in the neural control of respiration during sleep. Apnea is a normal physiologic event occurring regularly during sleep, but, if not interrupted, could lead to death. Within the last two decades, it was thought that SIDS might be a result of prolonged or recurrent sleep apnea. However, newer data suggest that failure of mechanisms terminating apnea, i.e., initiating respiration, are important in SIDS. Arousal stimulates respiration after the onset of sleep apnea, and therefore has become a focus of intense investigation. The new guidelines say children should be breast-fed, when possible, and vaccinated
