Felix Jones to Steelers: Philadelphia Eagles Officially Trade RB to Pittsburgh

Felix Jones to Steelers: Philadelphia Eagles Officially Trade RB to Pittsburgh, The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially acquired running back Felix Jones from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Eagles Insider's official Twitter confirmed the transaction, as the Steelers shipped off outside linebacker Adrian Robinson in the deal.

Jones was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2008 draft by the Dallas Cowboys, but he was inconsistent in his first five years in the league. The former All-American (2007) out of Arkansas had dealt with a number of injuries, with everything from his knees and ankles to his toe, hamstring and thighs.

In signing a one-year deal with the Eagles this offseason, there was formidable competition for Jones to go up against in the form of Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy and the young and talented Bryce Brown.

Evidently, Philadelphia felt Jones didn't fit in its plans even before he got to prove himself in a regular-season game.

When healthy, Jones has a dangerous combination of speed, agility and receiving ability. There have been flashes of that, but he has never emerged as a true No. 1 back, which is normally the expectation for a first-round pick at running back.

As part of a dynamic Razorbacks backfield in college, both Jones and Darren McFadden have had injury-riddled careers. Other draft classmates such as Chris Johnson, Matt Forte and Ray Rice have risen to elite NFL levels.

The Steelers are clearly looking for a spark to the backfield after second-round rookie Le'Veon Bell went down in the preseason with a mid-foot sprain. It will likely sideline him for a small portion of the regular season, according to ESPN, though the initial fear was that he needed surgery.

This is a worthy flier for Pittsburgh to take. Robinson is a second-year former undrafted free agent who likely won't make a huge contribution outside of special teams.

Meanwhile, Jones gives the Steelers another back to compete with Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Considering the relatively volatile nature of the Cowboys and Eagles in recent seasons, Jones could possibly revitalize his career in the most stable organization he's been a member of to date.

Jones ran for 402 yards and three touchdowns in 2012 on a career-low 3.6 yards per carry. He also caught 25 passes for 262 yards and two other additional scores.
