Kia Sorento 2014 recall

Kia Sorento 2014 recall, Kia is recalling certain 2014 model year Kia Sorento crossover SUVs for a front axle issue that may result in axle fracture. This is the same issue that led to the recall of 20,300 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport crossover SUVs.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the Kia recall at 9,345. Affected vehicles are 2014 Kia Sorento crossover SUVs equipped with the 2.4-liter engine and front-wheel drive (FWD).

Affected vehicles were built from January 7, 2013 through March 12, 2013.

The problem

According to Kia documentation (PDF), the right front axle driveshaft “may develop a crack in the area of the stub at the wheel end of the shaft.” Moving the vehicle from a stopped location can lead to shaft separation, causing a “loud noise” and the vehicle would lose “motive power.”

Furthermore, the Kia notification said, if the driver fails to engage the parking brake when the vehicle is parked on an incline, a roll away could occur. This increases the risk of a crash.

The automaker said that 2014 model year Sorento vehicles equipped with the 2.4-liter engine and all-wheel drive (AWD) and Sorento vehicles equipped with the 3.3-liter engine and FWD or AWD are not affected by this recall, as they have a different configuration and do not contain the condition.

Kia said it had received one customer complaint and 10 warranty claims but has not identified any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

What Kia will do

Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the front axle shaft assembly. The service will be performed at no charge.

The Kia safety recall, identified as #SC099, is expected to begin in September 2013. In the meantime, owners of 2014 Kia Sorento vehicles with 2.4-liter engine and FWD with any questions or concerns may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542.
