Lady Gaga says new single 'Applause' 'almost didn't make' new album 'ARTPOP'

Lady Gaga says new single 'Applause' 'almost didn't make' new album 'ARTPOP', Lady Gaga has revealed that her new single 'Applause' was nearly left off her forthcoming album 'ARTPOP'.

The singer was forced to unveil the lead track from her new LP ahead of schedule after it was leaked online, causing her to declare a "pop music emergency" and rush release the song. However, in a radio appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, she claimed that the track could easily not have been included on the LP.

She told Seacrest that the track "almost didn't make the album" until she met with Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine and played him 40 songs during a meeting. "We played 'Applause' last and Jimmy said to me, 'Well every single record you've played me has been better than the one you played before it, so the last one should be the first single,'" she said.

Discussing the decision making which went into choosing the album's lead single, she added: "It's an incredible process choosing the first single. You just play the music and see who gets drunk and takes their shirt off first."

Meanwhile, producer DJ White Shadow – who worked with Gaga on the record – said that the singer had written a huge mass of material for the LP. "It's a result of her dedication," he said. "We wrote 70-100 songs over the course of two and half years. This time we tried to have as much fun as we possibly could and then brought them to our friends and said, 'What do you think?'"

Earlier this week, Gaga unveiled the trailer for 'ARTPOP'. The 47-second clip shows the singer with her face covered in plastic being roundly jeered while a series of messages are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Seemingly making light of any backlash she might receive for the new LP, they include slogans such as "Lady Gaga is no longer relevant" and "Ever since 'Born This Way', she's a flop". She also recently confirmed rumours that she will headline the opening night of this year's iTunes Festival, which takes place at London's Roundhouse venue every night from September 1 to 30, and has promised fans a flurry of new material from her forthcoming 'ARTPOP' album. The LP is released on November 11.
