Motor trend best driver car, Our colleagues at Motor Trend spent the week driving some of the world’s most thrilling sports cars to pick this year’s winner of the annual Best Driver’s Car comparison. The week encompasses time spent both on and off the rack track, but rather than simply comparing the cars based on their horsepower, grip, and acceleration times, the MT editors strive to find the car that best responds to its driver.
This year, MT rounded up twelve cars: the Aston Martin Vanquish, Audi R8 V10 Plus, Bentley Continental GT Speed Le Mans Edition, BMW M6, Ford Focus ST, Jaguar F-Type V8 S, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Wagon, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, Nissan GT-R Track Edition, Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Porsche Cayman S, and the SRT Viper. The one big omission? A 2014 Chevrolet Corvette — a scheduling mix-up meant the C7 Corvette couldn’t attend this year’s party.
After the testing, the MT team was near unanimous in picking a winner: the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. It wasn’t too big a surprise, as last year the two-wheel-drive 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S won the Best Driver’s Car title.
“It’s the combination of the way it drives on the road and on the track,” explains Motor Trend associate road test editor Carlos Lago. “It’s stellar in both arenas, allowing the driver to explore themselves and the car.”
It certainly helps that the car has a healthy dose of power. The 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S has a 3.8-liter flat-six engine that delivers 400 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels; for MT’s testing, the Porsche was equipped with its optional PDK seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Pricing starts at $106,580, after a $950 destination charge.
