Retrial of Mubarak and others began in New Cairo, Former Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid was called as the first witness at the retrial of ex-President Hosni Mubarak, which began Sunday outside Cairo.
Mubarak, his two sons, former interior minister Habib El-Adly and a number of his aides were at the Police Academy in New Cairo for the start of their retrial on for their complicity in the killing of protesters during Egypt's January 2011 revolution, Ahram Online reported.
All 10 defendants attended the session.
Mubarak is also charged with conspiring with fugitive businessman Hussein Salem to export gas to Israel at below market prices. His lawyer, Farid El-Deeb called Ebeid as an an eyewitness on the alleged Egypt-Israel gas deal.
Security was strengthened at the Police Academy in an effort to prevent any possible riots, a police official said.
The defendants were first on trial in 2011 and 2012. Mubarak and El-Adly received life sentences in June 2012. Their verdicts were overturned in January.
