Tour bus crash: 55 injured as bus overturns going about 70 mph, say witnesses, A tour bus crash sent scores of folks to the hospital, with some needing to be airlifted. Witnesses saw the tour bus crash after it was seen braking hard and swerving on the highway. According to USA Today on Aug. 22, the bus overturned bringing multiple medical responders to the accident scene on Thursday.
The accident was just outside of L.A. and while authorities don't have all the details of the accident as of yet, witnesses report seeing the bus swerving on the highway before crashing and rolling over.
The L.A. Times reports a total of 55 people were injured in the tour bus bound for a casino when it turned over on the 210 Freeway in Irwindale today. An army of ambulances appeared along with helicopters to transport the injured. The highway was snarled for hours as the rescuers tried to move the injured away to area hospitals.
Witnesses saw the bus brake in the far-left lane and swerve across all the lanes, ended up on its side on the shoulder. A passerby kicked out the front window before emergency personal arrived to get passengers out of the bus. Passengers were mostly between the ages of 60 and 80-years-old.
The bus is chartered from the Cardinal Coach Line based out of Mansfield, which is just south of the accident. The bus is on its side with the emergency personal pulling the passengers out through the emergency exits which are located at the top of the bus.
The L.A. Times reports that witnesses to the crash helped pull the passengers out of the bus before the medical and rescue personal arrived. Five or six cars pulled over and that group of strangers got about half of the passengers out of the bus in about 15 minutes.
Videos taken from the news helicopter show skid marks across all the lanes of the freeway leading up to the crashed tour bus. Witness put the bus going about 70 mph when the crash occurred. A few elderly passengers who were thrown on top of each other when the bus overturned, appeared to be in shock, said witnesses.
The westbound lanes of the freeway remained closed so that the helicopters could land on the highway near the crash site to transport the injured to the hospitals. Injuries are described as “minor to moderate,” but this is before doctors at the hospital have assessed the crash victims.
