Poll: 4 in 10 want to see woman president

Poll: 4 in 10 want to see woman president, Fewer than four in 10 Americans said it’s important to see a woman become president in their lifetimes, with more Democrats than Republicans saying they want a woman in the Oval Office, a survey released Tuesday found.

Sixteen percent of Republican men surveyed for a Pew Research Center study on gender in politics and business said it matters to them to see a woman become president of the United States, polling found, while 20 percent of Republican women said they supported the same.

Perhaps with Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warren on their minds, Democrats were much more supportive of a female president, with 46 percent of men and 69 percent of women who identify with the party saying they want to see a woman elected.

In all, 38 percent of Americans said they hope that a woman is elected in their lifetimes, while 57 percent said it doesn’t matter to them.

Women still struggle with being perceived as electable, Pew found, with 58 percent of men and 73 percent of women surveyed saying it is easier for men to get elected to office.

But most of those surveyed said that women are as good if not better across several leadership qualities.
Majorities of those surveyed said they saw no difference between men and women on their ability to work out compromises, be honest and ethical, and stand up for beliefs.

Among those who said one gender had an advantage, 34 percent said that women are better than men at working out compromises and at being honest and ethical, compared to 9 percent and 3 percent, respectively, who said the same about men compared to women.

The poll surveyed 1,835 adults Nov. 12-21 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
