PM Modi summons Delhi police chief, asks him to probe recent acts of vandalism

PM Modi summons Delhi police chief, asks him to probe recent acts of vandalism, Hours after the alleged vandalisation incident at Holy Child Auxilium school in Delhi, Prime Minister on Friday summoned city police commissioner BS Bassi to express "his deep concern and anguish" over the rising crime rate in the national capital.

The PM asked the Delhi Police commissioner to speedily investigate the recent incidents of vandalism and to ensure that the guilty are brought to book.

The Prime Minister on Friday also called Union home secretary L C Goyal and instructed him to pay special attention to the rising incidents of crime and vandalism, and work towards ensuring the safety and security of women in the capital.

The PM summoned the police four hours after Delhi's chief minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal posted a strong condemnation of the incident on Twitter. Kejriwal tweeted: "I strongly condemn the attack on Holy Child Auxilium school. These kind of acts will not be tolerated."

During his meeting with Bassi, Modi is said to have conveyed his unhappiness at failure of the Delhi Police to take the probe into earlier half-a-dozen incidents of vandalisation at Christian institutions, to their logical conclusion and identify the culprits. He is said to have told the city police to pull up their socks and ensure that the accused are not only identified but arrested and prosecuted.

"I was summoned by the PM Modi. He called me to inquire about Vasant Vihar incident and he felt anguished about recent attacks on places of worship of Christian community," BS Bassi told reporters.

"We had briefed him about progress that has been made in previous cases. In Vikaspuri incident, three men were arrested and not part of fringe elements. In Rohini incident, it was a fire and arson. In Vasant Kunj incident, probe is on. In Dilshad Garden incident, crime branch SIT is probing it," Bassi said.

"Police have increased security around churches in Delhi," the Delhi Police commissioner said.

"An effective security arrangement will be soon put in place for protection of churches in Delhi," Bassi added.

A Christian school was allegedly vandalised by a group of unidentified persons in South Delhi's Vasant Vihar area in the wee hours on Friday, police said.

Police said the office of the school principal was vandalised and some CCTVs were damaged.

The incident took place at Holy Child Auxilium School following which the school was shut and students were asked to go back to their homes.HRD minister Smriti Irani, who is an alumna of the school, visited the Holy Child Auxilium campus on Friday afternoon.

An FIR has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station and a breakthrough is expected soon.

In January, some unidentified groups had vandalised a church in Vasant Kunj which triggered protests by people belonging to the Christian community.
