Amsterdam power outage
Amsterdam power outage, Flights at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport were snarled Friday morning after a power outage in and around the Dutch metropolis.
The power outage hit around 4:15 a.m. ET (9:15 a.m. local time), prompting Schiphol airport officials to warn of "severe disruptions" to flight schedules there. The power was out for about 90 minutes, with most flights canceled or diverted during that time.
Amsterdam is Europe's fifth-busiest airport and is the biggest hub for Dutch carrier KLM. Schiphol officials said power had been restored around 5:45 a.m. ET (10:45 a.m. local) time and that "air traffic will slowly be continued again."
Still, customers traveling to or through Amsterdam Friday should be prepared for disruptions as the airport works to resume a normal schedule.
The Guardian of London also warns that "public transport across the Netherlands was affected, with trains cancelled and passengers stuck in lifts, trams and subways."
It was not clear exactly how many Amsterdam flights had been affected because of the outage, but passengers at Schiphol Airport took to social media with images of a largely powerless airport.
