Glastonbury Festival Kanye
Glastonbury Festival Kanye, Thousands of music fans are putting their names behind a Change.org effort to cancel Kanye West’s upcoming appearance at the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England, in June.
The petition, titled "Cancel Kanye West's headline slot and get a rock band," had about 69,000 supporters as of Thursday afternoon.
“Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world,” petition sponsor Neil Lonsdale wrote in the petition’s description. “Kanye has been very outspoken on his views on music....he should listen to his own advice and pass his headline slot on to someone deserving! Lets prevent this musical injustice now!”
Tickets to the June 24-28 festival, which announced West’s appearance this week, are sold out.
West is known for being outspoken against artists such as Taylor Swift and Beck, including invading the stage during awards ceremonies.
West is scheduled to headline the Glastonbury Festival on June 27. Other performers include The Foo Fighters and Lionel Richie.
Lonsdale, an education worker who has tickets to the festival for the first time this year, told NME.com that he was upset when he heard that West would be headlining the event.
"I fought the temptation to scream and instead opted to hurl my iPhone across the room," Lonsdale said. "Two years ago we had The Rolling Stones playing the Saturday night, and this year we get Kanye West? It's an outrage!"
He added that he was surprised people seem to be taking seriously his petition, which was initially set up as a joke response, NME said.
"Don't get me wrong, if it works, then I'll be more than happy,” he said.
