Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly breaks Spotify record with 9.6 million streams in a single day

Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly breaks Spotify record with 9.6 million streams in a single day, All hail Kendrick Lamar! The universally acclaimed hip-hop star has done the unthinkable and bumped Michael Buble from the Spotify throne to claim the fastest-streamed album ever on the music sharing site with his new album To Pimp A Butterfly.

After dropping the album as an early surprise for fans on Monday, and to avoid his precious record finding its way online prematurely, the record has been played over 9.6 million times on its first day of release, which is mental. That’s more than any other album in the site’s entire seven-year history surpassing Buble’s much-loved festive album Christmas, which set a previous record of 9.5 million on Christmas Eve.

The rapper's album landed on iTunes and Spotify a week ahead of its March 23 schedule. Obviously fans could’t believe their luck, though Lamar appeared to be slightly baffled as to why his third studio album was up for sale without his knowledge.

In a raging post on Twitter, the multi Grammy Award winning star wrote: : “I WOULD LIKE 2 PERSONALLY THANK @Interscope FOR F*CKING UP OUR RELEASE.SOMEBODY GOTS 2 PAY 4 THIS MISTAKE !!!!"

Still, the record has been welcomed with open arms from fans, critics and fellow artists alike. Kanye West chipped up to tweet: KENDRICK IS AN INSPIRATION. THANK YOU FOR THE VIBRATIONS AND THE SPIRIT. YOUR MEANING, MESSAGE AND EXECUTION ARE GIFTS TO THE WORLD.”While GQ said of the record: “This is an extraordinary record, full of poignancy, power, emotion and incredible production. It's perhaps not even a stretch to say that it's the most densely-themed, musically-audacious hip-hop album since Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. And if that doesn't make you want to download this album right now, nothing will."

Boatsing an impressive rota of high profile producers including: Dr Dre, Pharrell Williams, Flying Lotus and Thundercat To Pimp A Butterfly is currently sitting at number one in iTunes charts across the world and looks certain to bump Sam Smith from the top of the UK Album Charts this weekend.
