Universal studios suicide, A man fatally shot himself at the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park on Friday.

Police responded to a 911 call at about 2:24 p.m. regarding a potential suicide at the park's address, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department confirms to PEOPLE.

When officers arrived, they found a man who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, an LASD spokesperson tells CBS.

According to the spokesperson, "the incident happened in an area designated for smokers behind the Despicable Me ride and fun zone, which is the park's newest attraction."

The shooting was out of view for many, but children and other guests were reportedly nearby.

Universal Studios has closed several attractions near the Despicable Me ride, where the incident took place, according to Variety.

How the shooter was able to get his weapon past security remains unclear, but this is not the first time a gunman has opened fire in the park.

A man shot at a crowd on the Universal CityWalk in May 2014, USA Today reported at the time. Although he was eventually killed by police, four bystanders were treated for minor injuries.
