3-year-old girl, man struck by car on Del. 9, A toddler was injured Wednesday night along with the man who tried to grab her when she ran into traffic on Del. 9 near New Castle, state police said.

The accident occurred about 8:10 p.m. on New Castle Avenue (Del. 9) south of Landers Lane while a group of people were standing on the median waiting to cross the highway, said Cpl. John Day.

A northbound 2007 Nissan Altima was driving in the left lane of Del. 9 when 3-year-old Brielle Starks suddenly darted into traffic in front of the driver, identified as 29-year-old Matthew Pierce, of Elkton, Md.

As the girl started to run, a 26-year-old New Castle man ran after her to get her out of harms way when the car hit both of them, Day said.

The girl was flown to Nemours/A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Rockland, where she was treated for an injury to her torso.

The man was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, where he was treated for arm and leg injuries and released.

Day said he did not know what, if any, is the relationship between the girl and the man.Smith and the other two occupants in his car were wearing seat belts and were not injured.

He was not cited, Day said.
