Man found alive after surviving 22 hours in Gulf of Mexico

Man found alive after surviving 22 hours in Gulf of Mexico, A boater who survived floating in the Gulf of Mexico for 22 hours after falling off his boat is in good condition at a Florida hospital, officials said.

Efstaios "Steve" Moumouris, 51, of Lake County, Fla., survived in the gulf without a life jacket after he fell from his 16-foot fishing boat Wednesday during a storm, the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday.

The U.S. Coast Guard and state officials found only his empty boat as they searched a 225-square mile area.

A family scallop fishing found him bobbing in the water, dehydrated and exhausted but otherwise healthy, and rescued him, Moumouris' wife Sia, 48, said Thursday.

"We got him on board. He was fairly coherent. He gave us a [telephone] number for his wife. We just got lucky and saw him," rescuer Todd Hoy told WTSP-TV, Tampa.

Moumouris was taken to Seven Rivers Medical Center in Crystal River, the newspaper said.
