Treasurer allegedly stole $250,000 from Pa. fire company

Treasurer allegedly stole $250,000 from Pa. fire company, The longtime treasurer of a volunteer fire company in a Philadelphia suburb surrendered Friday to face charges of embezzling $250,000, prosecutors said.

Ronald Kenneth Nolan was voted out in December by members of the Upper Gwynedd Fire Company after 24 years as treasurer, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman said. His successor found money was missing and eventually turned the investigation over to the district attorney.

Nolan, known as Ken, surrendered a day after a complaint was issued charging him with the theft of $249,703.77.

Investigators say Nolan took $116,000 in cash advances from fire company accounts and also charged personal expenses to fire company credit cards. His thefts allegedly began in 2006 when investigators say he used fire company money to pay for his daughter's wedding in Las Vegas, including flying guests to Nevada.

Nolan allegedly lost thousands of dollars gambling over the years, using fire company money to pay for 15 trips to Las Vegas and for vacations in Jamaica and China. He is charged with paying for personal items like jewelry, computers and spa visits with fire company funds.
