101-year-old woman dies of injuries after struck by squad car

101-year-old woman dies of injuries after struck by squad car, A 101-year-old woman who survived the Russian revolution and two world wars died after being hit by a St. Paul, Minn., police car, officials said.

Roza Sakhina, a Russian immigrant, died Wednesday of injuries she received when a police vehicle backed into her Aug. 16, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Thursday.

An officer responding to a complaint about a juvenile was backing up when the car struck Sakhina, police spokesman Paul Paulos said.

Sakhina, who was almost 80 when she emigrated to the United States, collapsed and was taken to the hospital, Paulos said.

The woman, who survived the 872-day siege of Leningrad, apparently was trying to cross the street, residents of the apartment building in which she lived told the Pioneer Press.

Police were awaiting results of a medical examiner's report, Paulos said Thursday, adding an accident-reconstruction investigation had begun.

Paulos did not identify the officer driving the car, but said he was placed on the a three-day administrative leave. He said results of the investigation will be sent to the Ramsey County attorney's office.

"The backing into is a contributing factor to possible injuries," Paulos said. "At this point, it's an unfortunate accident."

"She fell down and had a skull injury," said Sakhina's grandson, Ilya Finkelshteyn. "Her skull was cracked."

"She was a very fragile woman," Finkelshteyn said of his grandmother, adding she also was independent and active.

Sakhina was born in St. Petersburg and during her life saw its name changed several times, to Petrograd, Leningrad and then back to St. Petersburg.
